Bradford's Favorite Travel Photos Photograph #2 Location: Yangon (Rangoon), Myanmar Google Earth Coordinates:
Date: September 2005 Format and Resolution: Digital (photo available in 1200 X 1600 resolution) Photo Description: My buddies! Kids who I met every morning while I was in Yangon. The paste you see on their cheeks is called Thanakha. Thanaka (Limonia Acidissma Linn) is a tree with fragrant bark and hard, yellowish sweet-smelling wood that grows in Myanmar, Sri Lanka, India and the Himalayas. In Myanmar, Thanaka plays an important role as a skin protector, cosmetic and medicine (the leaves are used as a remedy for epilepsy in some regions). To make the Thanakha paste the bark is ground with a little water on a circular flat stone. This photo taken near the corner of Maha Bandoola Garden Street and Bogyoke Aung San Road.
